Humble Beginnings...

Like more than a few good things in life, my whisky passion started with a dram, a dram of whisky on my wedding day. It was nothing fancy mind, just an aptly named “Founders Reserve”.  From there I dived deep into the whisky ocean, and went - like a lot of you I imagine - on a wonderful journey of discovery.  A journey not just of taste, places, and special moments in time...but of whisky people and their stories.

Whisky is a wonderful medicine. When treated with respect, it brings people together, and encourages community, sharing and enjoyment.  Whisky stimulates creativity and its appreciation. It can open up the heart and stir the soul.

From just the three simple ingredients of barley, water, and yeast, and then through a romantic industrial - or even alchemical process - beautiful spirit emerges to be filled into casks, and rests there for time and wood to work their magic.  Later, sometimes much later, design & bottling occurs. Only then comes the special moment for us all to taste and discover this water of life.

East Coast Whisky represents the continuation of this journey, into sharing with you what whisky is out there, the experiences and stories it brings, and the people it meets along its way.

There will be blogging, tastings, whisky meals, festivals, cask bottling, and more as we journey to maturation.

Our focus is coastal and local, as myself and the team are based in East Lothian and Edinburgh, Scotland. Yet we are open to all who form this global whisk(e)y community, near and far.

So welcome, pour yourself a #dramo'the day and enjoy!!!

Online Charity Whisky Tasting for UKRAINE - East Coast Whisky - Friday 8th April

Updated: Mar 19, 2022

There are no words to fully capture the suffering, horror and loss of war, particularly when it involves the country where your ancestors came from, and in which your relatives still live. It is easy to feel disempowered, and yet we can still pray for peace and do our bit to help the victims and refugees of Putin's war. For me I am creating a series of tastings both for your enjoyment - it is important in dark times to remember what is good about life - and to raise money for the aid of those suffering right now. £2500 already raised, let’s get to £3000 people!!

This is a special charity tasting for which all the bottles have been donated THANK YOU SO MUCH (see below). All money raised beyond packaging, shipping and running costs (£30) will be given to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal (https://www.dec.org.uk/appeal/ukraine-humanitarian-appeal) and Doctors Without Borders (https://msf.org.uk).

11 Drams (15ml) are being offered, and an extra special mystery one from my private collection as an added incentive, depending on how much you give over the £110 cost:

+£40 from the 90's, +£80 from the 80's, +£120 from the 70's, +£160 from the '60's, +£200 Cognac from the 19th Century.

The Details

The tasting will be held on ZOOM, from 7.30-10pm GMT on Friday 8th April (If you can’t make that time, a recording will be available afterwards). The tasting is designed to be informative, yet informal, people really enjoy the fact that everyone can join in, and there are no whisky snobs or show-offs allowed!!

The 15ml drams will be sent to you, 1st class signed for (in a padded box) at least a week before the tasting. You will also receive some tasting notes, the running order, and the Zoom link in the days before the event. Please get in touch for shipping to the free world.

The 11 dram set costs £110, BUT PLEASE DONATE MORE IF YOU CAN (See above for an extra dram incentive).

To join, please pay: PayPal to dram@eastcoastwhisky.com including your name, address, & UKRAINE in the notes. Please use friends & family in order to maximise the donation amount! If you wish, you can also pay by bank transfer, please contact me for the details.

We are going to try and fill 50 spaces, so please spread the word or buy multiple sets!!

If this is your first tasting, please also email your name, address, & contact telephone number to dram@eastcoastwhisky.com

On Friday May 13th there will be a follow-up live in person tasting, held at The Edinburgh Larder...more details coming soon.

(To get the jump on these tastings, tours, and for general whisky chat, why not join the EAST COAST WHISKY CLAN on WhatsApp? To do so just email me your mobile and we will get you set up asap!!)

This great tasting is both sombre and splendid, at the same time, so please buy a pack even if you can't attend in person!!!

Peace,
